Stepping from a gas-powered family vehicle into a three-row electric SUV raises real questions about space, practicality, and what actually changes day to day. The 2026 Kia EV9 is the answer Kia has built for families at that crossroads — a seven- or eight-passenger electric SUV with a cargo layout designed for real use, seating configurations that adjust to passenger count, and a V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) system that turns the vehicle itself into a power source when the destination has none.
The EV9 lineup runs from the Light RWD with a 76.1 kWh battery to the dual-motor Land and GT-Line AWD configurations with a 99.8 kWh battery and up to 491 km of rated range on the Wind RWD. Here is what matters most for a family making this transition.
Cargo Space That Works Around Real Family Loads
Cargo capacity in the EV9 depends on which row is in use. Behind the third row, 1,233 L is available for everyday loads — groceries, sports bags, stroller. With the third row folded, that expands to 1,875 L. Remove the third row entirely and the EV9 opens to 2,314 L of total cargo volume behind the first row.
The EV9 uses power-folding third-row seats on Land GT-Line Package trims, which means those rear seats retract electrically rather than requiring manual wrestling. On trims with the Premium Package and above, the second row offers 2nd-row Captain's Chairs with power leg rests — a genuine comfort upgrade for rear passengers on longer family drives.
Roof rails are standard on Land AWD trims and above, and the Digital Lighting Grille is available on Plus Package and above. For families who need to carry items that don't fit inside, the EV9's architecture supports external load solutions without compromising the clean lines of the vehicle.

Seating Flexibility: Seven Across Three Rows
The EV9 is configured for seven passengers in its standard layout across all trims. The Land Premium Package converts the second row from a bench to Captain's Chairs, moving seating capacity to six but substantially improving the experience for second-row occupants. The GT-Line Package retains Captain's Chairs with the addition of 2nd-row wing-out headrests, power leg rests, and a 2nd-row centre console extension.
Third-row access benefits from the EV9's proportions — the vehicle's long wheelbase and upright greenhouse give rear passengers meaningful headroom and legroom, which is not always the case in shorter three-row SUVs where the third row is an afterthought.
V2L: Power Where There Is None

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) is available on the Land Premium Package and GT-Line Package configurations and provides power outlets both inside the cabin and outside the vehicle. The interior outlet is located under the second-row seats. The exterior outlet, when equipped, enables the EV9 to power devices, appliances, or equipment at any location — campsite, construction site, remote destination, or extended power outage.
The maximum V2L output is 3.68 kW (16A), which is sufficient to power a small appliance, a power tool, or keep devices charged continuously. For a family that uses an electric vehicle as part of an outdoor lifestyle, V2L removes a critical practical limitation of zero-emission travel.
AWD, Terrain Modes, and Towing
All Land and GT-Line AWD configurations use a dual-motor system producing 379 hp and 516 lbs-ft of torque combined. AWD configurations include Terrain Drive Modes for variable-surface conditions — useful for unpaved access roads, gravel, snow, or low-traction surfaces that a family vehicle may encounter outside the city.
Towing capacity on AWD configurations is rated at 5,000 lbs (2,268 kg) when properly equipped — the highest in the three-row Kia lineup. For families who tow a trailer, a small boat, or recreation equipment, this opens travel options that RWD family EVs with lower ratings cannot match.
The Light RWD is not equipped for towing. The Wind RWD is the maximum-range option at 491 km.
